Codes can be reused and ranges can overlap. An allocation does not confirm an aircraft’s identity or current activity. For enthusiast reference, not navigation or transponder-setting instructions.

How squawk codes work

A squawk is a Mode A transponder code formed from four octal digits. Only 0 through 7 are valid in each position.

Controllers can assign and reuse codes within published blocks. Some allocations overlap, so a search may return several matches. A code alone does not identify an aircraft or its activity.

Sources

UK SSR allocations: NATS AIS digital dataset, supplied by DAATM, effective 3 September 2026. Adapted into ScanLocal UK’s searchable code and range reference. Check NATS AIS for newer editions.

Common meanings come from CAA SERA.13005 and the CAA Skyway Code. Frequency-monitoring codes come from AIC Y 089/2026. MOD allocations are shown as “Reserved for MOD use”, without unit names, functions or notes.

ScanLocal UK is independent and is not endorsed by the CAA or NATS.

The additional procedure and frequency-monitoring references were reviewed on 4 September 2026. The frequency-monitoring circular replaces Y 028/2026.

Squawk code questions

What is a squawk code?

A squawk is a four-digit Mode A transponder code. Each digit is octal, so only 0 to 7 can appear. Air traffic services commonly assign discrete codes dynamically, while a small number have published contingency or conspicuity meanings.

Does every squawk have one permanent meaning?

No. Codes can be assigned dynamically and reused. The lookup includes the full UK SSR allocation dataset, alongside emergency meanings, frequency-monitoring details. MOD allocations are labelled Reserved for MOD use without unit or procedure details. A match identifies a published allocation, not necessarily the aircraft or activity you are seeing.

Where is the complete current UK SSR code list?

This lookup includes all 480 allocation rows from the NATS AIS UK SSR dataset effective 3 September 2026, covering all 4,096 possible codes. Search by code or civil controlling authority, including codes inside a range. MOD entries retain their code or range without additional details. Overlapping allocations are shown together. The original and any newer editions are available from NATS AIS.
